Blogger Journal Entry 3

I remember taking Standardized Tests when I was in elementary school. In the weeks leading up to the tests the teachers were stressed. I couldn’t sleep anticipating how I would do on the tests. I know the teachers were just trying to get everyone to try their best but it really put a lot of pressure on those of us who were worried already. The testing environment was very intimidating to me. I always worried that I would run out of time and not be able to answer all the questions on the tests. When I was eight, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. This can lead to needing to use the bathroom more often than others. Stress is also not good for someone who suffers from this. I was always afraid that I would need to go to the bathroom during the test. I personally am not a fan of standardized testing.  I do not feel that it gives an accurate measurement of where students are. Some students have testing anxiety and do not do well with tests. The experiences that I had throughout my childhood did play a part in my decision to become a teacher. As a young child I experienced several years of significant health issues. During this time, I had some very caring teachers who helped me to remain successful although I had to miss school due to multiple hospital stays and two major surgeries. That really meant a lot to me and my family. They were supportive and helped me to be successful. The impact that my teachers, along with the nurses I came in contact with as a young child, helped me determine that I wanted to do something when I was older in my life to help children. I wanted to give back and help others. I do have some concerns about teaching as a career. The main concern I have is properly running my classroom. I know that a lot of figurin...

I would like to think that I have some of these qualities but I would also like to grow in these areas too. I think that commitment is important because committed teachers will go above and beyond, adapting methods and building strong relationships with every student to help them reach their potential. I think that playing sports throughout my childhood and through high school has helped me to understand commitment. I feel that being caring is one of the most important qualities of a great teacher. I feel that going through the health problems that I went through as a young child helped me to have extra compassion for others. Being courageous as a teacher is important because teachers need to model bravery and not be afraid to try new methods. My personality is one that can be a little nervous to try new thin...
