The experiences that I had throughout my childhood did play a part in my decision to become a teacher. As a young child I experienced several years of significant health issues. During this time, I had some very caring teachers who helped me to remain successful although I had to miss school due to multiple hospital stays and two major surgeries. They never made me feel like I was different or a burden. They spent extra time helping me after hours and even took their personal time to come and visit me in Birmingham at the hospital. That really meant a lot to me and my family. They were supportive and helped me to be successful. The impact that my teachers, along with the nurses I came in contact with as a young child, helped me determine that I wanted to do something when I was older in my life to help children. I wanted to give back and help others. I do have some concerns about teaching as a career. The main concern I have is properly running my classroom. I know that a lot of figuring out what works best comes with trial and error but I just want to do a good job. I have heard many teaching professionals say that classroom management is the greatest struggle for new teachers. I know that different teachers use different things for discipline and classroom management. My concern is figuring out what will work best for my classroom. Perception of teaching is primarily influenced by the desire to make social contributions and influence children’s futures. The best reason to become a teacher is that you want to have a positive, inspiring impact on children’s lives. Even as a young child I knew that I wanted to work with children. I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do until my high school years. I then realized that being a teacher would allow me to help children and have the greatest impact on their lives.
